Description
Freeze-dried marjoram (Origanum majorana or Majorana hortensis) is an aromatic herb of the peppermint (Lamiaceae) family that has been grown for thousands of years. In Greek mythology, the marjoram was raised by the goddess Aphrodite.
Marjoram is more mild-tasting than oregano and tastes similar to thyme, but with a sweeter and stronger aroma. It is warm, slightly sharp and slightly bitter. Freeze-dried marjoram is a popular addition to salad dressings, meat dishes and is also suitable for seasoning vegetables, tomato-based dishes, pizza and poultry. However, marjoram harmonizes perfectly with oregano and basil in a popular dry mix of pizza herbs. You can also get a good combination by seasoning thyme, peppercorns, laurel, juniper berries and game and lamb dishes with a little black pepper. In the Mediterranean, marjoram is also used in pasta sauces containing tomatoes and in minced meat, potatoes, liver and vegetable dishes.
In Germany, marjoram fully justifies its popular name “sausage herb”, appearing as the main flavor in almost all sausage mixes.
